Tom KentI teach International Reporting at Columbia, and I teach students at the Journalism School and the School of International and Public Affairs. What I try to give them is a sense not only of what journalism is today, but what journalism has been, what the roots of journalism are.

There’s nothing like it – that’s why people go into journalism, because it gives an opportunity to see things and do things we’d never do otherwise. We get to meet the people who are actually making news; it’s as if you’re picking up history and holding it in your hand, you are right there where things are happening or decisions are being made.

The access you get as a journalist is just unmatched in any other profession.
